The way you interpret leadership has everything to do with the life values you think important. These life values are influenced by all kinds of cultural values: for instance, your company values, or the values of the culture in which you grew up. Personal mastery brings transformation
We all react differently to various situations, and that is the way we express ourselves. We are happy, angry, disappointed, passive, active, anxious, relaxed, you name it. But where does this behaviour come from? The way we behave, originates in what goes on in our head … our feelings and thoughts. And in turn, these are controlled by what we call our life values.
Our life values spring from our needs. In the middle of the previous century, Maslow ordered these needs in his famous Pyramid. In this hierarchy of needs, physiological needs such as food, water and sleep are at the bottom. Self-actualisation is at the top of the pyramid. There are literally thousands of life values, for example, ‘fidelity’, (financial) ‘security’, ‘sharing’, ‘personal development’, ‘family’, ‘assertiveness’, or ‘inspiration’. It is important to be aware of your own life values. Because the values that are important to you, determine your feelings concerning a certain subject, and therefore, the behaviour that arises from this.
Make conscious decisions as a leader and human being
If we feel and think a certain way about family, or money, we will (subconsciously) express this in our behaviour as well. If I think it is important to take care of my mother (value: ‘family’), then I will be inclined to bring her flowers more often, or go for a walk with her. And it’s the same way at work: if I think it important that the work ethic in the company runs smoothly (value: ‘efficiency’), I will be annoyed by a colleague who does not pull his or her weight.
Dare to experience tense as growth
But now, let us suppose that I find ‘family’ an important life value, but my boss does not understand that I want to act as a carer for my parents. He thinks I should just do my job, and that caring for my parents is my own private business. And therefore that I should do this in my own, private, time. This triggers my life value, and it will start eating at me… I will feel misunderstood at the workplace. This leads to a conflict, with all sorts of other consequences.
Another example; suppose I am the CEO of a company that has just merged. My value as a leader is ‘open communication’, but the company exists of various isolated units. These ‘islands’ do not, or hardly, communicate with each other. The marketing department does not consult with the sales department, and the business unit of one half of the company does not want to cooperate with the other half, due to which the profits dwindle and the long-term developments come to a standstill.
Flexibility as advantage and core value
In both these examples, a change of mindset is required in the workplace. But how does it work? . How do you get from one situation to the other?
